Nightwing Uniform (New Earth)
A mythical hero of Kryptonian mythology, the Nightwing, alongside its counterpart the Flamebird, served as inspiration as a mantle for a variety of Earth-based heroes from both the Super Family and the Bat Family.

Richard Grayson chose the mantle of “Nightwing” after his departure from operating under the Batman as “Robin”. Initially choosing a blue and yellow colour scheme, his suit possessed a flared collar and domino mask reminiscent of his circus acrobat origins.

Grayson would later evolve his suit to include the ability to catch wind drafts and help him to paraglide through the use of specialized “wings” built into the suit. This design was short-lived however as he found the suit’s weight encumbering and disliked how the “wings” would sometimes randomly catch drafts and push him off balance.

Choosing a colour scheme that was closer to dark theme of Batman, Grayson removed the “wing” design and instead augmented his suit with pouches in his gauntlets and boots, as well as including a pair of spring-loaded pouches in the suit’s back to store a pair of polymer escrima sticks for use as weapons.

While Grayson spent some time away on a year-long quest with Bruce Wayne and Timothy Drake after the Infinite Crisis, Jason Todd began operating as a more aggressive Nightwing in New York City. When Grayson returned to stop him, he had to employ the help of meta-human clothing designer, Cheyenne Freemont, who designed a costume similar to Grayson’s to protect her identity.

Trivia[]

  • Power Girl (Karen Starr) once donned a suit of Kryptonian armour and took the name “Nightwing” while spending time in the bottled city of Kandor alongside Supergirl (Kara Zor-el), who took the guise of “Flamebird” in a similar suit of armour.
  • Lor Zod, son of General Zod and Ursa, donned the mantle of Nightwing to police Kryptonian criminals when New Krypton was created with a symmetrical orbit from Earth. Initially possessing a typical super-suit, he later opted to wear a faux power-suit to conceal the origins of his powers.
